Characteristics
Birch mushroom (Leccinum scabrum (Bull.) Gray) is an edible mushroom from the boletus family (Boletaceae). The cap is brown to brown-gray, darker in age, initially protruding, later open, smooth, smooth on wet days, 5-18 cm wide. The tubes are white, later gray, long, the holes are small and round. The stalk is white, covered with black scales, slender, hard, full, thickened in the lower part, 8-15 cm high, 1-2 cm in diameter. The meat is white, does not change color when cut, and has a pleasant smell and taste. The spores are oblong, the poison is yellowish.
Habitat fungi
It grows singly or in groups in autumn in deciduous forests, under poplars and especially under birches.
Usage
It is an edible mushroom, of excellent quality. Young specimens are best, older ones are too soft. It needs to be heat treated before use.
