Characteristics

Honey creeper (Armillaria mellea (Vahl) P.Kumm.) is a type of edible mushroom from the Physalacriaceae family. The cap is yellow to dark brown like honey, on the crown it is much darker, the edge is more greyish, 5-15 cm wide, fleshy, at first it is semi-spherical, later it becomes bulging and finally open, the skin is sticky during the rainy season, it is covered with small, with dark scales that later disappear completely, it is thin and rolled up at the edges, later dissolved. The leaflets are initially white, later reddish, medium thick, attached to the stem along which they descend. The stem is cylindrical, slender, twisted, hard and fibrous, at first it is full, later it becomes hollow, scaly, it is yellow-brown in color, darker towards the bottom and slightly thickened in the lower part, it grows up to 15 cm in height. It has a permanent corolla on top, which is white, thick and wrinkled. The flesh is whitish, hard, tough, fibrous and spongy in the core, with an unpleasant smell, the taste is sour to bitter. The spores are elliptical, the otrusine is white.

Habitat fungi

It is a common mushroom, growing in groups from the end of summer and in autumn. The habitat is dead deciduous trees (oak, hornbeam), but it also grows on coniferous stumps.

Usage

It is a conditionally edible mushroom. Only the hat is used, the stem is hard and fibrous. It is difficult to digest, it is not recommended for sensitive people because it can cause mild poisoning, digestive problems and vomiting. It must be boiled to destroy toxins and the boiled water is drained, it can be dried or pickled in vinegar.
